Welcome |
This series of work reflects my experience as a young female, coping with 'stereotypes' set by celebrity culture, family, friends and sex. Through using narratives in my painting I explore the role of the gaze which arouses desires for acceptance.
I begin by taking photographs, often ones which contrast each other, to play with concepts of right and wrong and to challenge narrow viewpoints. Before painting, I collage the photos digitally or arrange them through a series of drawings. I use images and fashions from other eras to not only question the social structures of today but those of the past and future. The main objective of the work is to contrast two different stereotypes and play with the viewer's perception. It is essential that the images emerge full of ambiguity.
I search for a new reality, one which goes beyond this world full of pretentious ideals. Hopefully the viewer will look at this series and question the society in which we live and the boundaries that we set.
